First off, massive thanks to everyone who came out to Egham-On-Sea, devoured the candy floss and jumped around. It was ace! Jake Gill and Tabloid Vivant executed their pop stylings despite dodgy sound and Lets Wrestle absoloutley killed it. So so good! Matthias and Sevgi also threw down and got 'em going. The place was sweating 'till late, which was excellent to see. If you came, nice one. You made it happen!

We had our third house show a couple weeks back. We called it a birthday party because the society has been going a year now. The Pope's Head Exploded started with a slice of spoken word/sound, scaring half the people who had stopped by to party back out into the cold night in search of proper 'fun'. Tabloid Vivant took up the mantle and re-stored that saturday feeling with good ol' fashioned down beat pop, finishing with THE hit of the year in a song called Peter which features the greatest trumpet riff ever penned. Fuzzy Lights played a set of tense, seething, exploding post rock that made our living room floor vibrate with heavy sonic weight. YES YES YES. Good time and ace cake had and shared by all. Played most weeks on our radio show, wrapped up in excellent cut n' paste art and put out by Young Turks (who seem to have hit a streak of perfection), Alegranza is a burst of colour that exploded the autumn into huge flashes and bright patterns of percussion heavy rhythms wound tight and released, repeated, kept rolling on and on until collapse under too much excitement, handclaps, shouted chorus lines, sun soaked guitar lines and dancing. It's recorded warm and fuzzy like some basement club in Barcelona where walls swirl, blur, change shape with every drum beat and when the show finally stops, the blue yellow of dawn in the sky outside. OR the best record we've heard in ages.

Ahoy!

Our next gig has been confirmed for the new year. Expect as eclectic a line up as the last, but bigger and better. Details as we confirm them.

We are delighted to announce that we plan to start a creative writing magazine. Full details are below, but in short, the first issue will contain poetry/fiction/play writing/philosophical and political thought/new ideas and anything that is a little stimulating and fresh from RHUL students. We're looking for anyone and everyone to submit. Email lovetomakenoise@hotmail.co.uk with anything you've got. Articles will be wrapped up in clean design, between pages full of illustration and photography. We hope to have more details and a release date soon.

On to membership packs. We've had an amazing response with more people than we expected joining the good ship noise. We promised but havent delivered your membership packs. Hold tight, we will have them ready for the new year. We have only just raised enough money to press the Babar Luck recording and print the zine. If you joined, nice one! We'll sort you out soon. If you'd like to join, come see us at our next show or email.

All members should have been emailled one way or another. We've got a members only gig coming up, get down if you can make it. If you havent received an email, check your junk mail! We've got some very special guests playing a super intimate venue that you don't want to miss!

Those pesky disc spinning kids have only gone and blagged another spot at the SU... Holy Spinach! and the Dandy Highwayman will be representing Love To Make Noise and their own take on a good time (too many records, more beers...) at Tommy's Bar on thursday December 4th when Insanity Radio take over for the evening an host their House Party. We can smell some prime living room chic and a very weird/totally jump up set being cooked. Watch yr backs!

The last month has been a blast...

Massive, massive thanks and love to everyone who came to IT CAME FROM EGHAM!!! Thanks to you, the bands, DJs, techies, everyone that spread the word, we pulled it off and made it happen. The show sold out in one and a half hours with no presales, many apologies to anyone that couldnt get in. We tried our best to get more people in, but to no avail. Apart from that, everything went down really well, we couldnt have asked for more. Everybody's support has been invaluable. Hopefully now the Student Union will wake up and realise that there are people out there who actively want to see and hear and dance to good quality live music and eclectic DJs. We showed 'em! And not just us, everyone that came to play, paid to get in, helped set up, lended a hand during the night, span records, did some dancing, heard some new music, brand friends along, told whoever they knew about the show, watched from outside (sorry again, we'll sort it next time!)... Love To Make Noise is a collective that consists of everyone.

So... What of the night???

China Soul started the evening with stripped back, bare folk. Her soaring voice and carefully picked acoustic guitar notes came across like Eva Cassidy, Nina Simone and Feist, smooth, deep and tender songs from the bottom of her heart, the top of her lungs.

Mucky Little Paw Prints started just as Tommy's burst at the seams. We were very proud to see our 'house' band play to 200 people, and tear the roof down, as only penny whistle riffin', tambourine shakin', mandolin slayin' anti-folk kids can! Just the right amount of sugary sweetness, irresistable twee pop and charming lofi folk got the kids at the front dancing and everyone at the back stretching their necks to see who the upstarts on stage were. Best performance yet? Yes, yes, yes.

Robert Logan. Rembember that. Robert Logan shook the building to its foundations. We warned you of how good he would be and, accompanied by live drummer, Robert delivered a set of massive proportion, spanning low end, hypnotic, ambient compositions to frantic bursts of metronome drum beats, motorik rhythms, frantic electronica and abrasive, crushing, totally beautiful sonic textures. A psychedelic, presice mixture of dubstep, techno, krautrock and tense improvisation blew us away. Simple as that!

Python Lost closed the show. Scruffy kids armed with wonky post pop tunes and the best tribute song ever! Angles, splayed beats, roaring bass, soft croons and loud shouts in an arty mess to see the midnight hour in. Ace.

With notable mentions to Sevgi Umur, Dandy Highwayman and Holy Spinach, the resident LTMN DJs, and Owen Richards, whos photographs we exhibited on the night.

And what else???....

Our boys Holy Spinach and the Dandy Highwayman played one and a half hours of upbeat soul groove and out 'n out psyched rock n roll cuts at Insanity's Sex, Rock N Radio night. We also had a really nice shindig at our place for LTMN members and family, featuring the always excellent folk hero Babar Luck and our friends Fee and Josh. We're doing another one soon, so watch out!

Thats about it. Our next gig will be in the new year, as we have to get down to studies, sorting the membership packs and partying a little bit. Our djs should be out and about a little more and the radio show will go one every sunday until we run out of records.

Babar Luck (ex King Prawn) came to play our first show back in march. He set crosslands alight with tales of love and life and revoloution. Think the mind, soul and rhythm of Joe Strummer, Billy Bragg and King Tubby enbodied in a true east end rouge and anti folk hero. We are delighted to be releasing Babar's first live recording which is exclusive to Love To Make Noise. Strictly limited, recorded straight from the desk and presented in glorious technicolour in a luxurious jewell case, hear the improvisation, pure energy and wonderful journey Babar wove into a cold spring evening.

So here we are, a few months after our first show, a couple of weeks after our last exams, looking forward to summer and next year at Royal Holloway. We havent been too active lately, becuase of revision and more importantly, the consumption of real ale. So heres a little update to tell you whats going down...

As you may know, we managed to become a society after what seemed like a surreal X Factor style scrutiny of our project and ideas. We decided to look forward to next year instead of organising another show. We thought the Babar Luck gig was enough to showcase what we have planned for the future, and we wanted to concentrate on enjoying the sun!

We're still here and still full of ideas. We're currently cooking up a delightful set of events and a substantial membership pack for next september. The autumn is when Love To Make Noise will really start to develop, so keep 'em peeled.

1. Holy Fuck - Lovely Allen
HF's debut was released at the end of last year and was on of our favourites of '07. Pure rhythmic goodness, served up in huge slabs of energetic, krautrock esque, improvisational, dance music. They kind of blow our minds.

2. Battles - Atlas
Mirrored was another record that stormed last year's best of charts, and with good reason. Kings of repetition, experimentation and irresistable musical patterns returned with a set of mammoth math rock songs, of which Atlas is one of the best.

3. Errors - Toes
Massively overlooked Scottish troupe on the excellent Rock Action label. Their 7" singles and EP seemed to slip beneath the supposedly 'forward thinking' music press, leaving anyone that came across Errors with the best kept secret for a long time. Toes is their new single, taken from a forthcoming new album and blends angular riffs, irresistable drum beats and subtle electronics.

4. Devo - Jerkin' Back 'N' Forth
Our favourite post punk pioneers proved that they are still the best in the business with amazing shows last year. They played their first European shows for 20 years and showed all the young pretenders how to create seminal electro pop.

5. - Chromeo - Tenderoni
Splicing hip hop and electro and a whole bucket of sassy style, Chromeo create songs that slay
dancefloors the world over. They are playing a bunch of festivals this summer, go see them!

6. Hot Chip - Sexual Healing
Best cover ever? Best band ever? Yes.

7. Yuksek - Dirty Little Trip
Along with Crookers, Brodinski and DIM, Yuksek is reason to believe in electro again. Leading a new wave of producers that make the Ed Banger and Kitsune labels sound really stale, Dirty Little Trip is a good starting point for a fresh house perspective.

8. Ursula 1000 - Step Back (Deekline and Ed Solo Remix)
This was a song that began a memorable trip to Brighton. Freshers week seemed a million miles away when we jumped into an old morris minor and legged it up the motorway to the seaside. Excellent breaks that are guaranteed party starters.

9. Skream - Check It (Feat. Kid Sister)
One of the best tracks from Skream's debut. Dubstep at its best: jagged, heavy, a hands up, sweaty, rib breaker.

10. Dillinger - Cokane In My Brain
Classic reggae that will cure your blues and slap a big ol' smile on your face. No worries about anything at all. Hey Jim!...

11. - 13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me
The best thing about university is meeting all the different people. It also helps if some of those people buy as many records as you, have a good knowledge of 60's psyche and will happily go crate digging in Soho while half drunk on Tribute. Here's a slice of rock n roll introduced to us by the Dandy Highwayman. Watch out for his disc spinning skills next year...

12. - Iggy And The Stooges - Search And Destroy
Classic. One that'll make you want to crash and burn over and over and over again.

DISCO FEVER! NOW A SOCIETY!

We are now a society! We dont know what we're getting ourselves into, but one thing we can reveal is that good times are on the horizon! We applied to become a society so we can use the SU Main Hall, Tommys Bar, Medicine and Stumble Inn spaces for tasty musical treats across campus and our application has been successful, which is brilliant. So expect shenanigans, frolics and all sorts of party action during the 2008/9 year, we're planning some interesting things for ears that like something a little different.

If you want to join, give us a shout. It will cost seven pounds and we'll have some sort of 'package' containing an all manner of noisy delicacies to give to you in return. If you dont want to join, no worries, just come dance!

In other news, our man (boxer short booty queen) Kris Khadem recorded our first show last thursday, and has made a podcast for Insanity which will materialise sometime soon. Keep an eye out!

MASSIVE FOLK LOVE!

So there went our first show in a blur and a whirl that left us stressed and happy and glad that Love To Make Noise is finally happening!

After a clumsy start trying to manouvre tables chairs and sound equipment, Mucky Little Paw Prints opened the evening with a short, sharp set of gorgeous twee folk, five lofi pop songs built upon soaring vocals, spring time guitar strings, a splash of violin, penny whistle and glittering tambourine shakes. Next, Babar Luck, a true anti folk/DIY/Punk hero, famous for his bass playing with King Prawn and mad live performances. We just told people to come and see, to watch for themselves, to find out how one man and an acoustic guitar can be truly inspirational. For fifty minutes Babar conjured up a colourful tapestry of spoken word tales, feel good reggae-punk strumming and life affirming lyrics, drawing applause, shouts and laughter from those that had dared to come experience something new and unexpected at Crosslands. Picking songs from a huge repetoire and mixing them with long improvised parts that simmered and flurried, Babar set minds, ears and eyes alight! Handshake closed the show with a short, sure fire set of storming, knees up, dance 'till the whiskey runs dry songs which have been tightly honed on their extensive gig circuit of late. Their set once again confirmed their status as RHUL's best band, using the power of folk to summon hand claps, dance moves and much merriment as the night drew itself in.

Thanks to Luke and David for making it all sound good and to the Love To Make Noise crew for helping/postering/dancing/dealing with stressed telephone calls/getting our project up and go! Even more thanks to everybody that came, donated pennies, clapped loud after each song. If you came, watch out for more. In other news, we got to put words all over Insanity Radio last week, so if you heard them, nice one! We enjoyed drinking wine with Laura and talking salad with Kris!

LOVE ON THE RADIO!

We're set to cause trouble on airwaves across campus very soon; one or two of us will be making an appearance on The Laura Jo And Co Radio Show which airs at 11.30pm til 1am every saturday night on Insanity.

Laura plays an ace selection of awkward music for ears that enjoy electronica, art rock and good ol' fashioned noise. She has kindly invited us to play a few choice cuts by Babar Luck, Handshake and Mucky Little Pawprints while also talking a little about the Love To Make Noise project. So here we go: a debut, a premiere, an introduction, a good old fashioned knees up!

Its in Crosslands on March 6th and doors open at 8pm...

Babar Luck - Has been a cult legend on the UK punk scene (as cheesy as it sounds) for years. We first saw him in a field somewhere in Plymouth when we were 16, playing under the name of Luckfalk. He made the most idealistic, angered, fiery acoustic music we had ever heard. With a string of CD-Rs, one studion album release (on Snuff's 10Past12 imprint), hundreds of shows across the land and appearances in countless zines and national newspapers (Guardian, Time Out), he is both a ture DIY hero, ambassador of Anti Folk and a pop genius. Expect mad antics, pieces of spoken word, fiery ranting and feel good notes plucked from a battered, empowered guitar.

Here's what we wrote on our poster!

A true East End rouge will spin tales of love and life, shout cries of bloody revoloution and pluck notes from an acoustic guitar as if possessed by the spirit of Joe Strummer and the soul of King Tubby. An idealist, an anarchist and an anti folk hero fuses reggae, punk rock and world music with mad antics, spoken word and songs to set the world alight.

Handshake - We first saw two parts of Handshake play at Crosslands Unplugged - a boy with a guitar and a boy with an accordian playing soothing lofi pop for perfect for dreamers and optimists. Later on in the night the full ensemble took to the stage, unleashing a whisky drenched, Guiness swigging, good time barn dance of a sound that was met with cheer, applause and dancing feet. They won Holloway's Got Talent, have played shows at Water Rats and the Barfly and are ready to bring revoloution to RHUL with an unstoppable folk revivial!

Mucky Little Paw Prints - Are a brand new musical entity, excited to unleash a full live set for the first time after honing a charming brand of sea shanty pop at open mic nights on campus, in London and on the green grass between Wedderburn + Gowar. A set of fresh faced RHUL students inspired by penny whistles and Modest Mouse, the band are truly excited about music - nothing too fancy, nothing too over the top, just a good time made by a stripped down drum kit, two guitars, a little violin and a handful of soaring voices.

LOVE TO MAKE NOISE!

Hello and welcome to the Love To Make Noise blog, a small space on the internet where you can see what we're up to, what we're thinking and what we're planning!

Right now we're looking forward to our first show on March 6th and throwing ideas for the future around. Hopefully our little project can be something for everyone to enjoy, and maybe something that will unfold and grow and get somewhere good. Lets see.

We have a Facebook group called LOVE TO MAKE NOISE and posters for our Babar Luck gig will be up around RHUL campus real soon, so get ready for a true folk attack!

Thanks to our man George for the photograph of New York City. It made our day when we saw it. We're currently all about the city, the new Hot Chip record, scuzzy sixties rock n roll, trademark dance moves and taking over the world.
